If your only experience with Polo is buttoning your shirt in the morning then you need to make your way to the jetsetters playground of St Moritz, Switzerland for the Polo World Cup. Traditionally considered at British elite pastime, polo walks a delicate line between power and grace, human control and animal instincts. What makes this event extraordinary is that the whole game is played out on a snow turf covering the frozen lake of St Moritz with the Alps looming beyond like a row of sharkâs teeth. The World Cup has no shortage of thoroughbred horses or equally well bred riders, but it is sponsored by the city of St. Moritz, which makes it open to commoners like us to attend. The tournament regularly makes the society pages of newspapers around the world, so this could be your chance to drink champagne with Europe’s blueblood. Who knows, maybe you’ll get lucky and find yourself in a candid with Prince William.
This event also has special meaning for us since in a way it was the inspiration for Joobili. I visited St. Moritz and left feeling the city was over-priced and over-touristy. My business partner Tamas happened to visit St. Moritz during this event and he left with a radically different impression of the city. As we later swapped St. Moritz stories we realized the city was the same, the difference was timing. It got us thinking that the entire travel model was backwards. The first thing you’re asked to do on most travel websites is say “where” you want to go. This didn’t fit with our travel experiences. We believe asking “when” is the best way to decide “where”, especially if unique travel experiences is the goal.
